TUKPO, BENUE STATE – Tragedy unfolded on Thursday night in Ikobi, a community in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State, as unidentified gunmen hijacked a fully loaded Benue Links commercial bus, killing the driver and abducting all passengers on board.
Eyewitness accounts reveal that the assailants laid an ambush along the highway, fatally shooting the driver before forcing the passengers into a nearby bush. In a chilling twist, the attackers reportedly spared a toddler, leaving the child behind at the scene.
While no official statement has yet been issued by government authorities, security agencies have been notified and are actively working to locate and rescue the kidnapped victims.
The attack has sparked outrage across the region, with community leaders and residents expressing frustration over the increasing wave of violence in the area.
Reacting to the incident, President of the Ochetoha K’Idoma Youth Wing, Mike Magaji, strongly criticized the Benue State Government for what he described as its continued silence and inaction in the face of escalating insecurity.
“It is heartbreaking that our people continue to live in fear while the government remains silent. How many more lives must be lost before decisive action is taken?” he queried.
Magaji also condemned the state governor’s recent visit to Otukpo, describing it as disappointing and lacking in meaningful impact.
“Our people expected leadership, not vague reassurances. We need a clear and actionable plan to end these senseless attacks. The government must rise to its responsibility,” he said.
As residents await further developments, the incident adds to the growing list of security concerns in Benue State, underscoring the urgent need for a coordinated and effective response to protect lives and restore peace in the region.
