Following recent controversial intimate scenes in Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) Season 10, activist and lawyer Maduabuchi Idam has petitioned the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to either ban or strictly regulate the popular reality show. In a letter addressed to the NBC Director General, Idam highlighted concerns over the broadcast of obscene, indecent, and profane content that violates the provisions of the NBC Act of 1999. He emphasized that, despite the show’s 18+ rating, its explicit material remains accessible to unintended audiences, including children, through television and social media platforms.
Idam expressed deep worry about the adverse effects such exposure could have on Nigeria’s moral fabric. He argued that the wide availability of BBNaija’s content has caused a breakdown in societal values, as viewers outside the show’s target demographic often stumble upon highly explicit scenes. He claimed the program neither possesses educational, artistic, scientific, nor literary merits that could justify its content and urged the regulatory body to act swiftly to curb its perceived negative influence.
The lawyer demanded that the NBC take decisive action within thirty days, either by banning the show outright or by enforcing strict regulations to ensure the program is only accessible to adult audiences. Specifically, he proposed that BBNaija be restricted to highly controlled channels dedicated exclusively to mature viewers. Furthermore, he called for prohibitions on sharing or dissemination of explicit clips by the host company across social media platforms to prevent further exposure.
Idam’s petition underscores a broader concern over broadcasting standards and societal responsibility in Nigeria. He urged the NBC to recognize the urgent need to preserve public decency and protect vulnerable audiences, warning that failure to act within the stipulated time frame may lead to further legal interventions. The call highlights ongoing debates around media content regulation and the balance between entertainment value and societal morals in the country.
