President Tinubu, AbdulRahman Honor WAFCON-Winning Super Falcons with National Awards, Housing, and Cash Rewards

In a historic ceremony held on July 28, 2025, President Bola Tinubu conferred national honors on Nigeria’s senior women’s national football team, the Super Falcons, celebrating their triumphant victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

The President awarded each of the 24 players and the 11-member technical team the prestigious title of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON). Furthermore, each member received a three-bedroom apartment through the government’s Renewed Hope Housing Scheme, underscoring the administration’s commitment to rewarding national heroes.

In addition to these honors, President Tinubu approved generous cash rewards of $100,000 (in naira equivalent) for each player and $50,000 for each technical team member. This gesture highlights the government’s recognition of the team’s hard work and success.

Addressing the team, President Tinubu said, “You have inspired millions, especially young girls who now see proof that their dreams are valid and achievable. You represent the hope of today, tomorrow, and the day after. We will continue to support you and the next generations.”

The President also shared his emotional connection to the final match, recalling how the team’s performance lifted the nation’s spirits and united Nigerians across all walks of life.

Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, added to the accolades by announcing a ₦10 million donation to each player and technical team member on behalf of all 36 state governors.

First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu praised the Super Falcons as role models of courage, teamwork, and determination, and voiced her confidence in the team’s potential to become world champions.

Team captain Rasheedat Ajibade dedicated the victory to every Nigerian girl who dreams big, emphasizing that the team’s 10th WAFCON title symbolizes the unyielding spirit of Nigeria.

Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, described the win as a symbol of national unity and a triumph of belief and courage, crediting the current administration for its investments in sports and women’s empowerment.

The Super Falcons’ triumph not only marks a remarkable sporting achievement but also serves as a powerful beacon of hope, resilience, and national pride for Nigeria as it continues to foster talent and development in women’s sports.
